Why Does the Check Engine Light Turn On? Here Are 7 Common Reasons

An illuminated check engine light isn't automatically a reason to worry that your engine is about to fail. But you'll still want to get to the shop for computerized diagnostics so that any emerging issues can hopefully be nipped in the bud. Here are seven common reasons that the check engine light turns on.

Failing Catalytic Converter

With a healthy catalytic converter, your vehicle will produce far less air pollution. Symptoms of a catalytic converter problem include poor acceleration, dark exhaust smoke, and a sulphurous smell.

Bad Oxygen Sensor

Oxygen sensors keep tabs on how much unburned oxygen is present in the exhaust system. Oxygen sensor trouble can lead to problems with the catalytic converter.

Faulty Mass Air Flow Sensor

MAF sensors oversee the quantity of incoming air and calculate how much fuel should be injected with it. Signs of a MAF sensor problem include inconsistent acceleration and stalling out soon after fire up your engine.

Bad Ignition Coil

Your vehicle relies on healthy ignition coils to generate the spark your engine needs to fire up. There could be an ignition coil problem if you've noticed misfiring or power loss.

Failing Spark Plugs

Old, malfunctioning spark plugs can lead to a reduction in performance and fuel-efficiency. With vehicles manufactured after 2000, you often don't need new plugs until 100,000 miles. But with older automobiles, plug replacement is usually needed more regularly.

Loose/Missing Gas Cap

As strange is it may seem, loose gas caps are known to sometimes trigger the check engine light. You'll want to make sure your cap is on tight so that gas doesn't evaporate before your vehicle gets the chance to run on it.

Bad Battery/Charging System

A failing battery can result in low voltage at the computer, which can then cause your check engine light to illuminate.
