Basic Tips for Safe Winter Driving

Basic Tips for Safe Winter DrivingAs we head into winter's heart, it's especially important to take certain safety precautions. When winter weather creates challenging conditions, defensive driving can help to keep you safe. But there are also certain winter maintenance measures that can help you stay safer on the road. At Auto-Lab Complete Car Care Center, our local mechanics can make sure that your vehicle is fully prepared for the wintertime.

Helpful Tips for Driving Safely this Winter

When inclement weather brings difficult driving conditions, it's very important that you're driving with healthy brakes and a safe following distance. This will make it much less likely that you end up sliding into the car in front of you. While your normal following distance should be at least three seconds, this should be increased to six seconds in rain. And if there's snow, then your following distance should be bumped up to at least eight seconds.

Another simple precaution for winter driving is to always keep your headlights on, both night and day. With illuminated headlights, you'll be able to more easily see any hazards up ahead, and other drivers will have an easier time seeing you coming.

When winter weather starts making driving conditions particularly dangerous, you may find yourself in a scenario where it's safest to pull over and wait out the storm or have roadside assistance come and help you out. In such a scenario, it'll be safer to pull into a parking lot rather than just onto the shoulder. But if you do find yourself stuck on the shoulder and potentially in harm's way, then you should promptly put on your hazards and call up emergency services to explain what's going on. When you find yourself in a frightening situation on the road, you'll want to take some deep breaths and stay as calm as possible so that you make level-headed decisions about how to handle the situation.
